National Conference: “Empowerment, Recovery, Reintegration: Strengthening Services for Survivors of Gender-Based Violence”

On 27 November 2024, Tirana welcomed the national conference titled “Empowerment, Recovery, Reintegration: Strengthening Services for Survivors of Gender-Based Violence”, organized by the Gender Alliance for Development Center in collaboration with the Albanian Women Empowerment Network. The activity was part of the project “Institutionalizing Quality Rehabilitation and Reintegration Services for Violence Survivors II”, supported by the Austrian Development Agency. 

Conference purpose and objectives: The aim of the conference was to improve the quality of rehabilitation and reintegration services for gender-based violence survivors in Albania. Bringing together decision-makers, professionals and organization representatives, it addressed the need for:

-Deepening understanding of international standards and aligning national practices with them.
-Promoting intersectional cooperation for better integrated services.
-Creating a common vision for the future of quality services for survivors.

Main discussions
The conference started with opening remarks from distinguished personalities such as:

-Mrs. Etilda Gjonaj, Member of the Albanian Parliament, who emphasized the importance of aligning Albanian policies with international standards for supporting survivors. 
-Mrs. Denada Seferi Dibra, Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection, who talked about a multifaceted approach to rehabilitation and reintegration. 
-Mrs. Monika Zach, Austrian Ambassador to Albania, who conveyed Austria’s support for advancing gender equality. 
-Mrs. Fiona McCluney, Resident Coordinator of the UN in Albania, who shared global perspectives on gender-based violence and the role of international cooperation in advancing survivor-centered services.

Inspiring moments and cooperation – During the different sessions, speakers and participants discussed about:

-The international framework and national policies for supporting victims of violence.
-Multi-sectoral approaches for rehabilitation and reintegration, including direct experiences of survivors.

An emotional testimony by a survivor of violence served as a reflection moment for all participants.

In addition, during the conference, the Grant Agreement for the regional project “Institutionalizing Quality Rehabilitation and Reintegration Services for Violence Survivors II” was signed.
