Occupational diseases and workplace safety and health in the garment factories in Albania

6.4.2022 The "Gender Alliance for Development" Center (GADC) in cooperation with the organization "Glasen Tekstilec" from North Macedonia, organized the Regional Discussion Table: "Occupational diseases and workplace safety and health in the garment factories in Albania"

Representatives of civil society organizations from Macedonia and Albania, representatives of institutions and unions, Ms. Kristina Ampeva, Glasen Tekstilec, North Macedonia; Ms. Luljeta Krasta, Ministry of Finance and Economy; Mr. Gazmend Nelaj, Health Inspectorate; Ms. Eda Beqiri, Representative of the State Inspectorate of Labor and Social Services; Mr. Gentian Muça, Health and Safety Systems Management Expert; Mr. Edvin Prençe, representative of Pro Export Albania; Mr. Kol Nikolla, Confederation of Trade Unions of Albania, took part in this event. Online, this activity was welcomed by Mr. Johan Schmid, Regional Manager for the Western Balkans, Olof Palme International Centre.

Mr. Goran Popovski, Representative of the State Inspectorate for Labor and Social Services and Mr. Milan Petkovski, expert on safety and health at work, connected to the event live from North Macedonia.

The "Gender Alliance for Development" Center for Albania and Glasen Tekstilec for North Macedonia have prepared two research reports on Health and Safety at Work in the garment and footwear factories, and the main findings of the two reports were presented during the roundtable discussion.

Some of the issues that were discussed in this event:

·         Workplace safety and health in the garment and footwear factories.

·         The role of the doctor in garment and footwear factories.

·         General diseases and occupational diseases.

·         Inspections carried out in the garment sector regarding doctors and their role.

·         Concerning health issues of employees in garment and footwear factories.

·         Proposals for legal changes.
