Meeting with women workers in the garment and footwear manufacturing sector in Shkodra

25.5.2023 The Gender Alliance for Development Center organized today a special meeting with women workers in the garment and footwear manufacturing sector in the city of Shkodra. We are committed to raising awareness and voices to address a problem that is concerning for these women in their workplace: PAY!

At a time when insurance has increased starting from April 1, it is incomprehensible that these women’s wage remains the same! Women workers should be heard about the abolition of NORMS in the manufacturing sector. We believe in their skills and contribution to the garment and footwear manufacturing sector.

We are aware that their factories have fixed work conditions, have established occupational health and safety councils, but at the end of the month, the net payments that these women receive to feed their families are not sufficient! It is time to unite for the abolition of norms which determine the wage for women in garment and footwear factories.

Responsible companies have made advances in the improvement of health and safety conditions in the workplace. It is time for them to assign the same importance to the PAYMENT for the work these women do.

All women who contribute to our fashion should be heard and receive DECENT pay for their work.

All women should enjoy the same opportunities and decent wages for their work.

All women should have the ability to feed their families and influence their own personal and professional development.

Only by uniting our voices and using strong arguments, can we change this situation. Let’s create a society where gender rights are respected and payments are fair.

Thank you for the support Olof Palmes Internationella Center and Embassy of Sweden in Tirana.
