Round table on “Women workers’ rights in the textile and footwear factories, Covid-19 and the 2021 perspective”

19 January 2021 Gender Alliance Development Centre, in the framework of “Women’s rights in the labor market” Project, implemented with the support of the Swedish Government through Olof Palme Center, organized a round table on “Women workers’ rights in the textile and footwear factories, Covid-19 and the 2021 perspective”. The event was attended by 100 people, representatives of public and private institutions, donors, civil society, media, academia in direct connection and online through the ZOOM platform.

In this roundtable it was discussed about the work carried out by GADC for raising the awareness of women workers in the textile and footwear sector regarding their rights embodied in the Constitution of Albania, the Labor Code, and the Law on Occupational Safety and Health Rights, such as the provision of an employment contract, controlled workload, decent wage, and not under psychological pressure, and the right to work under proper health and security conditions.

In this roundtable it was discussed about problems COVID-19 pandemic has caused during the lockdown and in the following months for the textile and footwear companies, such as: Job security and sustainability for women and girls, economic well-being, and the perspective for 2021, as well as issues related to decent wage in general. Participants including representatives from the Parliament of Albania, Government of Albania, donors, the “textile and footwear” business, public institutions, as well as the Ombudsperson and the Antidiscrimination Commissioner and civil society organizations, media and academia hold a speech and shared different opinions.
